Founding History
Shift4 was founded in 1999 by Jared Isaacman, who was just 16 years old at the time. Identifying inefficiencies in the payment processing industry, Isaacman launched the company from his parents’ basement in Far Hills, New Jersey. Initially named United Bank Card, the company rebranded as Harbortouch in 2012 to better reflect its point-of-sale and payment technology offerings. Between 2014 and 2017, the company expanded through multiple acquisitions, including Merchant Services Inc. In 2017, it acquired Shift4 Corporation and rebranded as Shift4 Payments. The company went public on the New York Stock Exchange in June 2020, raising $345 million through its initial public offering.
